Better than the paycheck

Proverbs 8:10

16 How much better to acquire wisdom than gold! To gain understanding is more desirable than silver.

Proverbs 16:16

Bible Reading

Proverbs 8:10

10 Receive my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.

Why are you in school right now? If we are honest, many of us would say we are studying to get a good job, make money, and live comfortably. There is nothing wrong with wanting to provide for your family. But Proverbs 8:10 forces us to reassess our ultimate priorities. Wisdom cries out, "Receive my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold." God is teaching us a radical economic lesson. Your bank account can be wiped out by a market crash. Your possessions will eventually rust and fade. But the mind you are building right now, the discipline you are forging during late-night study sessions, and the critical thinking skills you are developing can serve you for a lifetime. Do not treat your education as just a stepping stone to a paycheck. Treat it as a divine training ground. Value the hard feedback from your professors; it is refining your character. Embrace the difficult reading assignments; they are building intellectual wealth. When you value knowledge above money, you remove much of the crushing anxiety of performance. You begin to study out of purpose and joy. And often, the student who loves learning becomes more prepared for success than the student who only loves money.

Action Point

Take a moment to check your motives. Write down three reasons you value your education that have nothing to do with money or future salary. Pin that list above your desk to remind you of your true purpose.

Prayer Point

Lord, I confess that I sometimes worry too much about my future finances. Please shift my desires. Help me value Your instruction more than silver. Give me a steady thirst for knowledge and academic mastery.

Reflection Point

How would your daily study habits change if you believed that learning a new concept was more valuable than receiving a hundred-dollar bill?
