The silent killer of pride
18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18Bible Reading
Proverbs 8:13
13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech.
There is a quiet danger moving through the halls of your university. It destroys GPAs. It ruins research papers. It causes students to fail out of their programs. That danger is arrogance. Proverbs 8:13 is direct. Wisdom says, "To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech." We often think of evil as something dramatic. But in the academic world, evil can look like pride. It looks like the student who crosses their arms in a lecture and thinks, "I already know all of this." It looks like the student who refuses to read the textbook because they think they are naturally gifted. Arrogance builds a wall around your mind. It makes you unteachable. If you want to achieve academic excellence, ask God to tear down that wall of pride. Cultivate humility. The most brilliant scholars in the world are often the most humble. They know how much they do not know. They ask questions. They seek correction. They hate laziness and their own pride. When you approach your studies with holy humility, your capacity to learn will grow.
Action Point
Think of one subject or class where you feel overly confident or slightly arrogant. Deliberately seek extra help for that class this week. Ask a question, visit a tutor, or read an extra chapter to remind yourself how much more there is to learn.
Prayer Point
Lord, expose any hidden pride or arrogance in my academic life. I want to be teachable. Give me a humble heart. Help me hate the bad habits and arrogance that keep me from reaching my full potential.
Reflection Point
How does a humble attitude make the process of studying less stressful and more enjoyable? Why is it exhausting to pretend that you already know everything?
