The upward look

Daniel 4:34-37
34 But at the end of those days I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven, and my sanity was restored to me. Then I praised the Most High, and I honored and glorified Him who lives forever: “For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation. 35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’” 36 At the same time my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne, and surpassing greatness was added to me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, for all His works are true and all His ways are just. And He is able to humble those who walk in pride.
It started with a downward look at the great Babylon he had built. It ended with an upward look to the King of heaven. The direction of your gaze shapes the direction of your life. When Nebuchadnezzar looked at himself, he lost his mind. When he looked to God, he got it back. In the high-pressure world of academics, we often look inward: “Am I smart enough? Can I do this?” Or we look outward: “Look at the competition. Look at the syllabus.” This produces anxiety. It can make us feel overwhelmed. The cure is to look upward. When you lift your eyes, you remember who is truly in charge. You remember that God is the Source of all wisdom. You realize that one exam cannot define you because the Ancient of Days has already spoken over your life. Today, change your posture. Stop staring at the textbook in panic. Look up. Breathe. The solution comes from above.
Action Point
Set a timer for every hour of study. When it goes off, stop. Look up at the ceiling or the sky. Say, "Lord, I look to You." Then go back to work.

Father, I fix my eyes on You. You are the Author and Perfecter of my faith. Lead my studies. Keep me sane. Keep me sound.

Does looking at my problems make them smaller? No. Does looking at God help me see them rightly? Yes.
