8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. 9 For they are a garland of grace on your head and a pendant around your neck.
Have you ever watched a graduation ceremony? The graduates wear cords and stoles around their necks. These are symbols of honor. They show what the student has achieved. Solomon talks about a different kind of adornment in Proverbs 1:9. He says the instruction of your father and mother is "a garland of grace" for your head and "a pendant around your neck." Before you wear the graduation stole, you must wear the garland of instruction. You must be willing to be taught. Many students want the degree without the discipline. They want the honor without the humility. It does not work that way. When you listen to a mentor, you are adding a jewel to your life. When you obey a hard instruction, you are polishing your crown. Do not see rules as restrictions only. See them as adornments. A disciplined life is a beautiful life. A teachable spirit is one of the most attractive things on campus. Wear instruction proudly. It is shaping you into a leader in your field.
