The courage to walk alone

Proverbs 1:10-19

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers.

Psalm 1:1

Bible Reading

Proverbs 1:10-19

10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not yield to them. 11 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause, 12 let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those descending into the Pit. 13 We will find all manner of precious goods; we will fill our houses with plunder. 14 Throw in your lot with us; let us all share one purse”— 15 my son, do not walk the road with them or set foot upon their path. 16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed blood. 17 How futile it is to spread the net where any bird can see it! 18 But they lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own lives. 19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy, whose unjust gain takes the lives of its possessors.

"Come with us!" That invitation is powerful. We all want to belong. We all want a crew. But Solomon warns us that sometimes the crew is a sinking ship. In Proverbs 1, the gang promises easy money and shared loot. In school, that promise may sound like easy grades, wild parties, or the answers to the test. They say, "Let us all share one purse." But notice what happens. They lie in wait for their own blood. The shortcut is a dead end. When you cheat, you are not only cheating the system. You are cheating your future self. You are hollowing out your own character. Academic excellence requires the courage to be different. It requires the strength to say, "No, I cannot go out tonight. I have a paper to write." "No, I will not use that cheat sheet. I am going to learn this." You may feel left out for a moment. But you are protecting your life. You are building a foundation that will stand when the crowd has scattered.

Action Point

Is there a group chat, a Discord server, or a lunch table that is toxic to your spiritual or academic health? Leave it today. Mute the notifications. Walk away.

Prayer Point

Lord, I belong to You. I do not want to follow the crowd to do wrong things. Give me the strength to stand alone if I have to. Protect me from the enticement of the easy path. Amen.

Reflection Point

Who is influencing me more: my peers or my Savior? How can I be a light to my friends without falling into their darkness?
