Don't turn out the lights

Imagine walking on a well-lit highway. You can see the destination. You can see the potholes. You are safe. Then, for some reason, you jump the guardrail and walk into the dark forest. You stumble. You get lost. This is what Proverbs 2:13 describes. It speaks of those who "leave the straight paths to walk in the ways of darkness." Why do students do this? Why quit the discipline that brings success? Often, the straight path feels hard. It requires showing up. It requires saying no. The dark path feels free: no rules, no alarm clocks. But the freedom of the dark is a trap. In the dark, you cannot see the cliff. You cannot see the predator. Academic failure loves the dark. It loves the student who stops checking the syllabus, stops attending class, and stops caring. Stay on the highway. Keep the lights on. Discipline may feel hard, but it is the path that leads safely to the destination.
