11 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have sinned against You.
Imagine a farmer who spends the entire spring sitting on his porch playing video games. He never plows the field. He never plants a seed. Then, in autumn, he walks out to his empty, weed-filled dirt patch and gets angry at God. He cries, “Why have You cursed me with no crop? This is so unfair!” We would say that farmer is foolish. The empty field is not a mysterious curse. It is the natural consequence of his own laziness. He is experiencing the physics of the harvest. Daniel recognized the same truth in his prayer. Israel had ignored God’s instructions. They had refused to plant seeds of obedience. When disaster came, Daniel did not blame God. He said that “the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses” had been poured out because they had sinned. In your academic life, the law of the harvest is always at work. You cannot play games all semester and expect to harvest an A on the final exam. A bad grade is not always a cruel trick played by a mean professor. Often, it is the harvest of the seeds you planted. But here is the good news: you can change the seeds. If you do not like your current grades, start planting seeds of focus. Plant hours in the library. Plant thoughtful questions during office hours. If you sow diligence, you are positioned to reap a harvest of academic growth and excellence.

Look at your lowest grade right now. Trace it back to the specific actions, or lack of actions, that contributed to it. Write down one new “seed” you will plant this week to change the trajectory of that class.

Lord, forgive me for the times I have wanted a harvest without doing the work. Help me embrace the law of sowing and reaping. Give me discipline to plant good seeds in my studies every day.
