Grit when the vision feels heavy
16 For though a righteous man may fall seven times, he still gets up; but the wicked stumble in bad times.
Proverbs 24:16Bible Reading
Daniel 8:1
1 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, Daniel, subsequent to the one that had appeared to me earlier.
Daniel 8 is filled with world-shaking visions. Empires crash. Kings rise and fall. Stars are thrown to the ground. The information is overwhelming, and it leaves Daniel exhausted, sick, and confounded. Have you ever felt that way in your academic journey? Have you ever stared at a mountain of homework, felt the weight of your deadlines, and wanted to pull the covers over your head? The pressure to excel can wear down your body and mind. But the final sentence of the chapter gives hope. Daniel does not stay in bed. He says, "Then I got up and went about the king’s business." This is a secret of academic excellence. Excellence is not feeling strong all the time. It is not having perfect understanding at every moment. Excellence is getting up when you feel like quitting. It is going to the library when you are tired. It is writing the essay while you are still seeking clarity. You serve the King of kings. Your education can become part of His business when you offer it to Him. When you are exhausted, ask the Holy Spirit for strength. He can give you grace to rise from the dust. Get up today, open your books, and faithfully do the King’s business.
Action Point
If you have been procrastinating because you feel overwhelmed or confused, pause now. Stand up, take a deep breath, pray for strength, and begin that task for twenty minutes. Break the cycle of paralysis.
Prayer Point
Lord, I am often tired and confused by the demands of my classes. Sometimes I feel like staying in bed and avoiding the work. Please forgive my avoidance and strengthen my resolve. Give me the grit of Daniel. Strengthen my body and mind so I can get up today and faithfully do the academic business You have assigned to me.
Reflection Point
Why do I let confusion stop me from taking action? How can I separate emotional exhaustion from my duty to keep moving forward in my studies?
