When Daniel understood the promise that his people would be restored, he did not simply relax. He turned his attention to the Lord God. He sought Him with prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. Why? Because Daniel knew that knowing the truth and walking into the truth are not the same thing. He knew that great breakthroughs call for humility before God. He humbled himself completely before the Lord. As students, we often lack this kind of holy seriousness. We want high honors, but we do not want to sacrifice comfort. We want to master our subjects, but we refuse to turn off our phones. We pray casual prayers for exams while living distracted lives. Daniel calls us higher. He calls us to disciplined desperation. Sometimes you must stay away from entertainment. Sometimes you must admit you are failing and ask a professor for help. When you set your face toward God and combine hard work with humble prayer, God sees. He responds to the humble heart. Your academic breakthrough may be waiting on the other side of self-discipline and sincere prayer.
