Don’t touch the stove

Proverbs 6:24-35

13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Bible Reading

Proverbs 6:24-35

24 to keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. 25 Do not lust in your heart for her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes. 26 For the levy of the prostitute is poverty, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. 27 Can a man embrace fire and his clothes not be burned? 28 Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet? 29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. 30 Men do not despise the thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger. 31 Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up all the wealth of his house. 32 He who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. 33 Wounds and dishonor will befall him, and his reproach will never be wiped away. 34 For jealousy enrages a husband, and he will show no mercy in the day of vengeance. 35 He will not be appeased by any ransom, or persuaded by lavish gifts.

When we were children, our parents told us, “Do not touch the stove. It is hot!” They did not say it to be mean. They said it because they understood the nature of fire. Fire burns. It does not care who you are. It burns. Solomon tells us the same thing: “Can a man embrace fire and his clothes not be burned?” The answer is clear. No. Yet as students, we often think we are fireproof. We think we can cheat just once and not get caught. We think we can date someone who pulls us away from God and not get hurt. We think we can nurse a secret addiction and still excel. We are scooping fire into our laps. The burn is coming. It may be a failed grade. It may be a broken heart. It may be a lost reputation. But the burn is coming. The wise student respects the fire. They stay away from the stove. They do not ask how close they can get to sin. They ask how far away they can stay. Protect your lap. Protect your clothes. Protect your precious life. The heat of sin is not worth the scar on your soul.

Action Point

Identify one hot stove in your life—a temptation you keep flirting with. Draw a physical line on a piece of paper to represent a boundary. Write “Do Not Cross” on it. Keep it on your desk.

Prayer Point

Lord, I respect Your laws. I know sin burns. Keep me from the arrogance of thinking I am fireproof. Give me wisdom to stay far from the edge of the cliff. Preserve my life for Your great purpose. In Jesus’ name.

Reflection Point

Am I playing with a fire that could burn my future?
